The name Shrigley is derived from a location called Shrigley in Cheshire,England.
In the records of Omerod we find that John Shrigley Esq. and his son in 1453 were a considerable farmers. There was also a prominent family called Pott who owned the Pott Hall. The town took the name Pott-Shrigley. In that area is located Shrigley Park, the Shrigley manor and Shrigley school which has existed for many years. The village of Pott-Shrigley is in the Macclesfield Forest. This forest was a Royal Forest for King Richard II. King Richard II had hired a few Shrigley's to be a part of his employment. A Shrigley was a forester and therefore on royal payroll for life. King Richard II also hired John Shrigley son of Thomas. John was an archer for the king. John made 6 pence a day for life.
-Members of the Srigley clan can be proud of their ancestry. Srigley's were pioneers, they were occupied with working their farms, raising their families, and with thoughts of moving on. It is not documented if the Srigley's that lived in England were Quakers or not but in Canada we know that they were.

As the city abruptly ends, north of the MacDonald Cartier Freeway, you find yourself in the country, with historical markers here and there. Drive through a few towns, and north of Aurora, approaching Newmarket watch for a small Quaker Meeting house and cemetery, close to the busy highway. The meeting house is still in use. Here are buried Robert Srigley and some of his family members."

The Shrigley's are ancestors of Maud de Shrigey who in 1313 married William de Downes. The Downes family held the Shrigley domain through 500 years. In 1819 Edward Downes sold his ancestral acres. Shrigley Hall was then owned by the Turners and Lowthers until 1932.
